Council President Martinez, LA Department of Cultural Affairs Call for Submissions to Virtual Gallery @CreateLikeAWoman Ahead of Women’s History Month

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez has partnered with the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs to co-curate a virtual art gallery on Instagram ahead of March 1st, the official start of Women’s History Month. The gallery, entitled “Create Like A Woman”, will showcase art created and submitted by women across Los Angeles.

“Women bore the brunt of this pandemic as employees, as parents, and as caregivers,” said Council President Martinez. “Women’s History Month is a time for us to recognize the women that have influenced history, but also a time to recognize the contributions of women today. This gallery is a celebration of the incredible women of Los Angeles–it’s a space for women to be unapologetically themselves after two years of seemingly nonstop hardship.”

Each year, Women’s History Month is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the contributions of women. This year’s theme, designated by the National Women’s History Alliance, is Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.

The gallery will feature art across all forms of media including visual art, literature, music, dance, and performative art. The theme for the social media generated gallery, “Create Like a Woman” is part of a series of events that Council President Martinez will be hosting to celebrate and amplify the creativity of women and girls during this year’s Women’s History Month. In light of the pandemic, some of the sub themes include: mental health and wellbeing; community; and strength.

“The Department of Cultural Affairs celebrates and honors the women who have paved the path and shaped the modern arts and cultural environment to ensure equity and equality with opportunities, pay, treatment, and respect for women,” said Daniel Tarica, DCA Interim General Manager. “We are proud to collaborate with Council President Martinez to recognize and celebrate creative expression from women and girls in Los Angeles.”

A limited number of participants will be invited to have their art showcased on the gallery page. Entries submitted by Monday, February 28, at 12:00pm will be prioritized for review. However, entries will be accepted through March 25, 2022 and posted on the Create Like a Woman Gallery on a rolling basis throughout the month.
