I was proud to stand Wednesday with trailblazer Patti Giggans, Denim Day founder, and CEO of Peace Over Violence, alongside Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez and Supervisor Hilda Solis to proclaim Denim Day 2020 in Los Angeles and to remind everyone that by wearing denim we speak out against sexual assault, protect victims and educate our communities on sexual violence prevention.
Last week, I introduced legislation highlighting the rise in Domestic Violence Hotline calls by as much as 51%, during the early weeks of the emergency and Safer at Home orders. And we fear these numbers might be underreported, especially for undocumented immigrant women who are often fearful of the government. My motion asks for a report back on the City’s outreach efforts to help these vulnerable women. And on Denim Day and every day, we encourage all domestic violence and sexual assault victims to come forward and when they do, we will believe them.
