Women at the LA Fire Department

LAFD recently announced two exciting leadership promotions within the department which are exciting for women fire fighters! Kady Kepner was born and raised in the Valley, and now she has been promoted to be a Battalion Chief in Battalion 10, which covers much of Council District 6.

Assistant Chief Kristin Crowley will soon assume the leadership role of the Fire Prevention Bureau for the City.  Chief Crowley will become the first-ever female Fire Marshall for our City!

Congratulations Chief Kepner and Chief Crowley!

What’s more, I have been working with the Los Angeles Fire Department to ensure our new recruits are more reflective of Los Angeles residents.  We’ve created programs to encourage more women to join the fire department.  One of those programs is a “Girls Camp” which I sponsored in August.

“Girls Camp” is an opportunity to show teen girls what it takes to be a fire fighter and get them interested in careers in the fire department.  Abigail Bondonna from Sun Valley, 14, participated in the camp, and hopes to be a fire fighter some day!  The girls participated in all sorts of activities – from forcible entry tools, axe, chainsaw, and aerial ladders.
