Statement From Councilwoman Nury Martinez on Passage of Enhancing the City's Harassment and Discrimination Policies
Following Recommendations From the Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Working Group
Los Angeles, CA - City of Los Angeles Councilwoman Nury Martinez issued the following statement after the motion to enhance the City’s harassment and discrimination policies was passed at today’s City Council meeting:
“In January 2018, we created the Harassment and Discrimination Working Group and spent six months researching best practices in preventing harassment and discrimination in the workplace while also developing recommendations to enhance our policies, systems, and training. My goal in all of this was to ensure that our policies and systems in place guaranteed transparency. Transparency for the victim and transparency for the accused.
“As the Budget Committee goes through their process, I want to make sure that we keep our eye on this issue and provide Personnel Department with the resources necessary to be able to have contacted 100% of the cases filed within 10 days of Personnel Department receiving the report. No one should have to wait and wonder whether their report was filed in vain. Now that the Working Group has finished their task, we as a body need to do our part and follow through with implementing their recommendations. We have had decades of inequality in the workplace that we have to undo. We owe it to our employees. Change will not come overnight, but with a little time and effort we can make sure that what changes we made will have a lasting impact.”
Councilwoman Nury Martinez is the President Pro-Tem of the Los Angeles City Council. She represents the Sixth Council District, which includes all or parts of the neighborhoods of Van Nuys, Lake Balboa, Sun Valley, Panorama City, Arleta, North Hollywood, and North Hills East.
