Statement From Councilwoman Martinez on Protecting Funding for SART Centers
Councilwoman Martinez Leads City Council to Increase Amount of Money City Reimburses SART Centers
Los Angeles - Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nury Martinez (Sixth District) issued the following statement after the City Council voted to increase the amount of money the City reimburses Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Centers for each completed exam:
“Sexual Assault Response Team exams, and the nurses and physicians who administer these exams, play a crucial role in prosecuting sex crimes. Because Los Angeles leads the nation with some of the best SART Centers, they deserve to be reimbursed with the appropriate amount for this important service.
“Today’s vote means that for the first time in 16 years, reimbursement rates will be adjusted to ensure that not only do we protect the exams themselves, but also ensure that the nurses and physicians who administer these exams are paid when they are called to testify on their findings in court. Increasing the amount of money we reimburse will help protect the integrity of this vital tool of our legal system, and it will assure that as a City we can continue to be counted on to treat victims who have been emotionally and physically abused.”
Councilwoman Nury Martinez is the Assistant President Pro-Tem of the Los Angeles City Council. She represents the 6th Council District, which includes all or parts of the neighborhoods of Van Nuys, Lake Balboa, Sun Valley, Panorama City, Arleta, North Hollywood, and North Hills East.
