On Saturday, September 22, a truly impressive roundup of Los Angeles and California elected officials converged at the Discovery Cube Los Angeles in Sylmar to welcome San Fernando Valley's newest elected official, Luz Rivas. I have known Luz since our days at San Fernando High School! Now, Assemblywoman Rivas has headed off to Sacramento to fight for the people she grew up with and the community she grew up in.
With a degree from MIT in Electrical Engineering, Luz was on a path to incredible economic and professional success. But she turned it down to return to her community and found a non-profit called DIY Girls to encourage girls from our community to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). From there, a career in policy devoted to raising up our girls and community soon followed. That is what is so great about Luz, and why we are lucky to have her!
