Recognizing LGBT Pride in the Valley

June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride month! There are many LGBT Pride celebrations throughout the City, and I’m honored to represent the community at many of these events, but it is even more important to me to bring resources to families in our district.  When a family member comes out as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, it is often something the rest of the family isn’t prepared to deal with and they turn to others for help.  It is our responsibility as a community to provide those resources for our youth and families here in the Northeast San Fernando Valley.Speaking at LGBT Event

As part of this effort, I hosted the 2nd annual LGBT Pride event at Van Nuys City Hall, where we had a wide range of resources for our LGBT community members and their families.  We screened, “Vito,” a biographical film about the life of early LGBT and AIDS activist Vito Russo, and held a panel discussion afterwards.  We also took a few minutes to honor and remember the victims of the horrible Orlando massacre that happened at a Florida gay nightclub on Latino night in early June.

Thank you to the organizations that participated in the resource fair.  If you are looking for resources, I encourage you to check out any of these great organizations:

GLSEN, Northeast Valley Health Corporation, Los Angeles LGBT Center, Latino Equality Alliance, CSUN Pride Center, Cross Cultural Expressions, San Fernando Valley LGBT Community Center, Somos Familia Valle, Bienestar, Los Angeles HIV Law and Policy Project, Valley Community Healthcare, UCLA HIV Research Study Volunteer Project (RSVP), and The Village Family Services
