North Hills Community Park

We’ve recently led the effort to revitalize our North Hills Community Park. My team has worked diligently to revitalize this park and increase the attendance of park patrons as opposed to gang members. North Hills Community Park

We began the project by re-sodding the field and allowing soccer leagues to rent the park space for practice and league play. We’ve also focused enforcement efforts on those who are using our park for illegal activities.

Next, my team, in partnership with LA Parks and Recs and the Los Angeles Police Department, began enforcing the closure of the park and the parking lot. We were focused on the parking lot closure, because at night, LAPD stated that allowing parking posed a problem because the park was used as a "drive-thru" for the sale of narcotics.

Our efforts have helped our North Hills East community gain trust in our local LAPD officers. Also, I’ve led the effort to see the park office get renovated, and it will now be occupied as an LAPD Drop-in Center. Community members there tell me they’re grateful and happy to learn that there was going to be a greater presence of officers in the community. The park's office will also be staffed by a LA Parks and Recs staff member to aid in the supervision of the park beginning this fall. The park's office will also be used by the North Hills Neighborhood Council for committee meetings. The office was furnished thanks to the generous donation from Green Arrow Nurseries.

We’ve also started to activate the park.  We want people to know this is a community park, and gang members aren’t welcome! We hosted one of our Movies in the Park events there. About 365 people attended! Other events that we have hosted this month include an "Ice Cream Social" hosted by our office in partnership with LAPD, First 5 LA Best Start and last week, my office, the North Hills East Neighborhood Council, and the San Fernando Valley Partnership hosted a cup cake decorating contest. Our office plans to further create positive programming at our North Hills Community Park to provide a safe space for families and children to enjoy.
