It has only been a few weeks since we passed the ordinance to give the Department of Water and Power the ability to shut off utilities at illegal cannabis businesses, but we are already seeing results! In mid-March, the LAPD partnered with LADWP to complete a search warrant at an illegal cannabis business in our District.
They recovered evidence and then shut down power to the business. This is exactly why I advocated for this common-sense legislation in the first place. I have long argued that it is unfair that our residents are forced to subsidize illegal cannabis businesses. Moreover, it is frankly unfair to the other legal businesses that are not flouting the law. I am proud to see that the common-sense ordinance I worked to pass is already being put to good use. As a City, we are sending a loud and clear message that our neighborhoods and laws must be respected.
