In mid-March I joined Councilmember David Ryu for an interview with Alex Cohen on our paid parental leave proposal. Since being elected to the City Council, I have made working women and children my priority. From raising the minimum wage to committing to building more green space for families, or creating safe working environments for our working women, I choose to focus on issues that will advance the status of women and children.
As the cost of living continues to rise while wages stay the same, America is becoming more and more hostile to working people hoping to start a family. This is especially true of expecting and nursing mothers. It is time for us to recognize that working moms are some of the smartest, most devoted, and most productive workers America has to offer. Paid parental leave settles the score for working families and finally brings the Los Angeles economy in line with the rest of the developed world. Advancing a Paid Parental Leave program in Los Angeles is a critical step towards making our City a more family-friendly place for working families. I am proud to work with my colleague Councilmember David E. Ryu on this important piece of legislation and look forward to seeing its success to the finish line.
