If you have ever read my newsletter before, you know I am a big supporter of our friends at the LAFD. Something I noticed soon after taking office was the real gender gap in the ranks of our City’s bravest. While we have made great strides in integrating our police and other departments, less than five percent of our sworn LAFD recruits are women.
When the opportunity came along to sponsor a camp focused on recruiting more women, I jumped at the chance. This past September, my colleague, Councilmember Gil Cedillo, and I jointly sponsored our fifth LAFD Girls Camp. This fall, almost a hundred girls gathered at the Frank Hodgkin Training Center in Council District 1 and climbed the ladder, wore the uniform and explored what a career in the LAFD could be like. I am so proud of these young women, who stepped up and dared to follow their dreams. Such a fun day! A big thank you to the Los Angeles Fire Department and JoinLAFD! If there is a girl in your life who you think might be interested, we’ll be back this spring in Panorama City. Stay tuned!
