This week, in Council, it was my great honor to recognize Rodrigo T. Garcia. Mr. Garcia is Founding President of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
Like me, Mr. Garcia had to overcome many social and institutional barriers to succeed in his field. To help pave the way for fellow and future Latinos, he co-founded SHPE in Los Angeles. Since 1974, SHPE has grown to more than 250 chapters nationwide, connecting thousands of Latinos with an interest in engineering and inspiring youth toward careers in STEM. Thank you, Mr. Garcia, for your persistence, passion, and dedication to diversity in the field of engineering. Thank you also to Los Angeles Board of Public Works commissioner Luz Rivas, and to LA Sanitation, for your civic spirit and continued commitment to ensuring equal access to STEM opportunities in L.A.
