Each year the National Education Association celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday with Read Across America events. For 18 years, over 45 million teachers, community leaders and children across the nation celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday by reading together and developing a love of learning. Here in the Sixth, I had a wonderful time joining Ms. Hayes' second grade class at Andrés and Maria Cárdenas Elementary School in Van Nuys.
Since taking office, I've hosted events for families and children including my Gift of Reading celebrations at our Van Nuys, Sun Valley and Panorama City libraries that introduce young children to the exciting world that can be found in the pages of a book. As a mother and former member of the school board, I've always given special attention to the children in my District because they will be the leaders in our community and our City.
Today we know the difference that childhood literacy can be throughout a person's life. Students who are unable to read proficiently by the 3rd grade are 4 times likelier to drop out of school. If we want to see the Sixth District thrive, this cannot be an option for children that live here. So I am dedicated to seeing our children succeed.
This year, I enjoyed Sally and the Some-Thing by George O'Connor with Ms. Hayes and her class and we had a wonderful time discovering the story. I can't wait for the next opportunity to reach out to our children to bring new life to books for more children in the Sixth.
