This month in honor of Veteran’s Day, I was proud to recognize Nowlin Haltom for his service to our country. A longtime resident of Van Nuys and the Sixth District, Nowlin is a combat veteran of the Vietnam War and served our country in the armed forces until 1970. Since returning home, Nowlin has continued to answer the call of service. He has made it his mission to be an advocate for veterans (especially LGBTQ) as the community outreach chair for the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights and as a volunteer for OutServe-SLDN.
Today, he is the area captain for the Northwest Van Nuys Neighborhood Watch group. Beyond that, Nowlin is also a staunch ally in helping me fight human trafficking and promoting public safety. Nowlin was joined in council by his partner Michael, his daughter Kate, and his two grandchildren. I’m proud to recognize Nowlin Haltom as my Veteran of the Year in the Sixth Council District. Thank you to all who serve and have served.
