Councilwoman Nury Martinez Moves to Shut-Off Power for Illegal Cannabis Dispensaries in Los Angeles

Los Angeles - City of Los Angeles Councilwoman Nury Martinez issued the following statement after the Los Angeles City Council voted in favor of a motion she introduced with Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, to empower the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to cut off the power supply of illegal and unlicensed commercial cannabis retail locations:

“For years, I have been fighting so that hardworking communities are no longer forced to put up with illegal and unlicensed cannabis businesses located near our schools, day care centers, and residential neighborhoods. Three years ago, I asked the Department of Water and Power to address this issue when we were trying to regulate dispensaries. With the City’s new regulatory system for recreational cannabis, today's action brings us one step closer to being able to stop these illegal businesses from taking advantage of our taxpayer-funded services. Businesses that flout the rule of law must not be allowed to prey on our communities with impunity."

Additionally, Cat Packer, Executive Director of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cannabis Regulation said, “The Department of Cannabis Regulation is pleased to see movement on this very important enforcement tool that will be monumental in curbing existing and new illegal cannabis establishments in the City. We will continue to work with LADWP, LAPD and the City Attorney to ensure the Council’s actions today will be successful.”

Councilwoman Nury Martinez is the President Pro-Tem of the Los Angeles City Council. She represents the Sixth Council District, which includes all or parts of the neighborhoods of Van Nuys, Lake Balboa, Sun Valley, Panorama City, Arleta, North Hollywood, and North Hills East.
