Councilwoman Nury Martinez Introduces Motion to Keep Cannabis-Related Products Out of the Hands of Our Kids
Recommending a Cannabis Enforcement Program Similar to That Created for Tobacco and Alcohol
Los Angeles, CA - City of Los Angeles Councilwoman Nury Martinez issued the following statement after her motion to call for a Cannabis Enforcement Program was introduced to the City Council:
“The legalization of cannabis in Los Angeles has had many names since I took office: Proposition D, Measure M, and now Proposition 64. But no matter what we have called it, my position has always remained the same: The safety of our families and youngest residents must come first.
“It is my responsibility to serve not only the Angelenos who voted in favor of cannabis legalization, but also the children of my District who could not vote and are targeted by cannabis billboards and flavored products every single day. Moreover, my District has long been home to an overconcentration of cannabis businesses which negatively impacts the safety and quality of life for all of our residents.
“My proposal is not designed to roll back any of the important progress made by the Department of Cannabis Regulation and the City. I am asking that we be consistent and hold cannabis to the same standard that we do tobacco and alcohol, and that means creating a robust Cannabis Enforcement Program that aims to keep cannabis-related products out of the hands of our kids.”
Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer said, "I applaud Councilmember Martinez for her leadership on this issue. Her proposal would complement existing enforcement and add an important safeguard to protect our kids."
Councilwoman Nury Martinez is the President Pro-Tem of the Los Angeles City Council. She represents the Sixth Council District, which includes all or parts of the neighborhoods of Van Nuys, Lake Balboa, Sun Valley, Panorama City, Arleta, North Hollywood, and North Hills East.
